TL DR - This right here is the major paradigm shift that /r/homenetworking needs to realize when switching from consumer all-in-one hardware to purpose-built APs. As /u/bchiodini said, do the latter may deliver more signal to the client, but the client (with it's comparatively very weak radio) may not be able to return that signal to the AP. If signal is to low, however, you should lean more on adjusting AP location and/or adding more APs, versus cranking up the transmit power on what you already have in place. If signal is too high, then reducing transmit power is an option. Best way to confirm this is to stick a wifi analyzer app on your Android/iPhone and physically test.
